4th Floor Apartment
Lweibdeh, Amman
2021
” Let’s paint the apartment white. Not brilliant white, but a matt, absorbent white. The white of white gypsum plaster. We will use brushes instead of rollers for the walls and ceilings. Rollers leave a dappled texture which takes away from the flatness of the plaster. The cupboards can also be white. We can use a cheap composite board like MDF for the doors and side panels and paint them egg shell white using soft brushes. There is a technique for doing this which produces a smooth texture where the brush strokes are barely visible. Cupboards painted this way age with a beautiful patina. The glazed opening is expansive, disproportionate; only the floor and ceiling are bigger. Robust sections of timber will divide it equally into squarish frames – not landscape or portrait which are too easily associated, but square like the minimal art of the 1960s which has a more abstract rhythm. The table (made from thick oak planks), the bathrooms and the bedroom are less clear now, but all of it will make space for more beautiful imaginings.”
