Deir Youssef Interior

Deir Youssef Apartment Interior
Abdoun, Amman
2018

In the reworked interiors of the Deir Yousef apartment minimal interventions in the building fabric provide a background for an eclectic collection of furniture and artworks; a terrace is opened up to bring in light and air, ceiling and door heights are maximised and texture and colour are employed to build character. The entrance hall floor is tiled in shades of white and grey/brown marble based on sketches by Paul Klee from his book ‘Theory of Form and Figuration’, c1930. From there, rooms with contrasting atmospheres and furnishings anticipate a wide range of uses and experiences reflecting the client’s brief and international upbringing.

Bespoke, locally produced furniture items, coexist with hand carved Nigerian tables and sculpture, and classic modern furniture, giving the impression of a collection built over time. This makes for a relaxed atmosphere, a work in progress, able to accommodate the changing needs of the client.
